Dual Screening Test

It involves the calculation of the risk of certain common fetal abnormalities (such as Down’s syndrome) using ultrasound between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation, nuchal translucency and a laboratory screening test using a blood sample from the mother. The dual screening test is not a diagnostic test. Therefore, the presence of these syndromes cannot be established with certainty. It only identifies high-risk pregnant women. Thus, in high-risk pregnancies, definitive diagnostic tests (such as fetal DNA in maternal blood, amniocentesis, chorionic villus biopsy) can be performed.
