What is Infertility?

Infertility is the inability to achieve pregnancy for 12 months with the same partner, without contraception, despite regular vaginal sexual intercourse. Approximately 15% of married couples face this problem. Infertility can be of male or female origin. Male-related causes are 30-40%, female-related causes are 40-50%, and both causes are 20%. However, no cause can be found in 10-15% of couples. This last group is called ‘unexplained infertility’.

In young couples who desire a child, couples are evaluated at the end of 1 year and necessary tests are started. However, if the woman’s age is more than 35, if there are previous diseases, surgeries, etc. related to the uterus, tubes and ovaries, if there is a known sperm abnormality, if the man has experienced problems related to the reproductive organs, examinations should be started without waiting 12 months.
