Causes of Infertility in Men
Hormonal causes The pituitary gland in the lower part of the brain secretes the hormones FSH and LH. These hormones stimulate the production of sperm from the testes and the secretion of the male hormone testosterone. Hormonal disorders can cause sperm production disorders in the testes. Genetic abnormalities Disorders in the structure of the sperm; insufficient sperm count and motile sperm ratio Trauma and some previous infections; such as epididymal infections and mumps disease involving the testicles. Blockages in the sperm ducts; sperm produced in the testicles pass through the epididymis and are transported to the penis through sperm carrier ducts known as vas deferens. The sperm cells produced may not be able to reach the ejaculate (semen) due to an obstruction in this system. Congenital absence of vas deferens, sexually transmitted diseases or obstructions caused by certain infections can cause infertility by disrupting sperm excretion.
