Myomas

Myomas are benign growths that are quite common in women. They are found in approximately one in every four or five women over the age of 35. Myomas may not cause any symptoms and may not require treatment. Risk factors include obesity, nulliparity, being of African descent (myomas are 3-9 times more common in blacks), and having a family history. Symptoms: • Menorrhagia (more menstrual bleeding than normal) • Bleeding between periods. • Menstrual periods that are longer than normal. • Menstrual periods that are painful or accompanied by pelvic contractions. • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen. • Frequent urination. • Pain during intercourse. • Constipation Diagnosis: Myomas are usually asymptomatic and are discovered during a routine gynecological examination, diagnostic test, or screening.
